Chicago Craic Smuggler - Irish Whiskey Cocktail

Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on

The Chicago Craic Smuggler is an IWSA riff on a summer sour cocktail. The name is derived from the ingredients that make up this complex blend of flavors. Chicago's smuggling legacy during Prohibition is the theme that ties the ingredients together.

Smuggling Nun Irish Poitin is made by the Copeland Distillery in Northern Ireland. The product's name comes from the true story of a nun smuggling Irish Poitin into the USA in a bottle of holy water. The use of Malort Liqueur, known as Chicago's drink, links the bootlegging to the center of illegal activity during Prohibition. We modernized the illegal activity from poitin to drugs with a facetious reference to crack, but in this case the craic meaning Irish expression for fun, gossip, and good conversation.

EQUIPMENT

INGREDIENTS

  • 0.5 oz Smuggling Nun Irish Poitin
  • 0.75 oz Method & Madness Single Grain Irish Whiskey
  • 0.25 oz Jeppson's Malort Liqueur
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup
  • 0.75 oz Grapefruit juice
  • ~0.25 oz Lemon (squeeze small size lemon)

*All the ingredients are available in the USA

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine ingredients with ice in shaker
  • Shake for 10 seconds
  • Strain into chilled glass

Get ready for a complex breakdown of flavors. The wormwood influenced Jeppson’s Malört brings a herbaceous bitterness balanced against the smooth, cereal-forward, and slightly smoky notes of Smuggling Nun Irish Poitín, and the sweet, vanilla-and-wood-spice finish of Method and Madness Single Grain Whiskey. The grapefruit notes in the Malorts liqueur and Method and Madness whiskey are bound by the grapefruit juice to create this high proof bitter sour cocktail.
