Fercullen Single Malt

Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on

Fercullen Single Malt is the first 100% distilled Irish Whiskey release from Powerscourt Distillery. The distillery opened in 2018 in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow on the Powerscourt Estate, House and Gardens. Against the backdrop of the Wicklow Mountains and surrounded by the beautiful estate gardens, the Powerscourt Distillery produces Irish Whiskeys under the brand name Fercullen.

The distillery, built out of an old mill on the estate grounds, lives up to its beautiful surroundings. In addition to the three copper pot stills, the facility includes numerous private tasting rooms, function areas, private bars, and a visitor center gift shop all accessible as part of guided tour. The site also includes a warehouse next to the distillery where the casks of newly made spirit is matured into future Fercullen Irish Whiskey.

Fercullen comes from 'Sliabh Fera Cualannk' meaning Fercullen Mountain which is located next to the Powerscourt Distillery. The Fercullen range of Irish Whiskeys has included a series of sourced single grain and single malt whiskeys over the past six years as their distilled spirit matured. Fercullen Single Malt, the first distilled in Co. Wicklow in over 100 years, was released in April 2023.

Fercullen Single Malt is made from 100% malted barley and bottled onsite at 46% abv. The non-age statement whiskey is matured for 4-5 years exclusively in ex-bourbon casks. While non-chill filtered, coloring is added per the bottle label "Mit Farbstoff'.

Official Tasting Notes:

Nose:
Toffee, baking spices, vanilla, dessert apples, pears, soft leather, cinnamon, nutmeg, baked buttered pastry crusts.

Taste:
Vanilla Custard, soft oak, salted caramel, digestives, tarte tatin.

Finish:
Warming oak spices, soft leather, honeyed almonds, stewed fruits.

This is an exciting release from one of the new wave of Irish distilleries. Exclusive bourbon cask single malts really let the true nature of the distilled spirit shine on its own without any masking from heavy wine finishing. Fans of these type of whiskeys should appreciate this release from a different distillery. It's a clean liquid with notes of biscuits, cinnamon, honey, and mild spice. The medium finish coats the mouth with a lovely spice. Further maturation may allow for a future age statement release to compare to Knappogue 12yr or Jack Ryan Beggars Bush. Until then, this is a wonderful entry into the NAS single malt category along with the likes of Tyrconnell, Dingle, Connacht, and Teeling.
