Black Emerald 7yr Rum Cask Finish - IWSA Review - October 2026
Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on

Launched in late 2025, the Black Emerald brand has ambitious goals for the Single Grain Irish Whiskey style. Its mission statement aims for the brand to be the biggest single grain Irish Whiskey in the next 5 years. To this end, the brand's commitment is to exclusively release single grain style expressions.
The independent brand is championing single grain Irish Whiskey as the "forgotten and underappreciated style". Single Grain is produced from one distillery, using a continuous column still (as opposed to a copper pot still), from a mash bill consisting predominantly of non-barley grains like corn, wheat, or rye. Most Irish single grain whiskeys use corn or maize with a few using wheat. Approximately 5% malted barley is used in the mashbill as well to jumpstart the fermentation process.
Most single grain production is used for making blends by combining it with single pot still (Jameson) or single malt (BlackBush), or both (Tullamore Dew). It wasn't until ~1997 when the innovative Cooley Distillery launched Greenore 8yr old as the first bottled Irish Single Grain whiskey. Since then, dozens of single grain expressions have been released, with notables including Teeling, Method and Madness, and W.D. O'Connell.
Black Emerald is promoting their single grain whiskeys as approachable under the tagline "No One Drinks Alone". Black Emerald wants their whiskeys to be shared and not collected. Because of the way it is made, the Single Grain style is lighter, milder, and generally sweeter than its malt and pot still 'siblings'. Single Grain could be considered a session whiskey for this reason. It also means that its flavor profile can be greatly impacted by cask influence. Black Emerald has indicated that all of their expressions will be age statement single grains that are finished beyond the initial bourbon cask maturation.
Black Emerald's initial launches were a 7yr rum cask finish and 15yr cognac cask finish. Today the focus is specifically on the rum cask variety. The liquid was sourced from Great Northern Distillery, appropriate seeing how John Teeling was the Irish single grain pioneer at Cooley and has continued its promotion at his new distillery. Bottled at 45% abv, the single grain was originally matured in ex-bourbon casks with an undisclosed duration in Caribbean rum casks.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Tropical fruit, vanilla, honey, warm spice
Palate: Soft spice, bright citrus, caramel sweetness
Finish: Warm, lingering. Oak and tropical fruit
The rum influence is evident on both the nose and palate. Caramelized sugar, honey, and overripe banana flavors linger along with a mild, pleasurable spice finish. Very easy to drink without being thin or weak, likely aided by the solid 45% abv. Enjoyable flavors with just the right amount of rum "funk" make for a fun whiskey drinking experience.
The bottle design and label is modern and eye catching, with a design that evokes color waves from an emerald held up to the light. Bottles should stand out on store shelves to aid in purchase potential. The brand has also engaged a direct to consumer delivery system using online retail platforms and a specific US dedicated website store that delivers across the country. Maybe indicative of the brand's name, Black Emeral bottles are priced at relative premium levels with the 7yr at $75 and 15yr at $90 which could deter first time buyers. If purchasing both bottles on the US website, the $20 shipping fee is waived.
If looking for an easy drinking Irish Whiskey, particularly to share amongst friends, Black Emerald 7yr Rum Cask finish may be just what you are looking for, a hidden gem!
