Redbreast 18yr
Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on
Redbreast is one of the most well known and awarded Irish Whiskeys as well as the torch bearer for the single pot still style. Only 20 years ago, Redbreast 12yr was one of only two single pot still brands in existence along with Green Spot. Since 2005, the Redbreast brand has expanded into a range with varying age statements and unique cask finishes. Redbreast 18yr is the latest to join the nest with its release in September 2024.
The Redbreast range now consists of 12, 15, 18, 21, and 27 year age statements along with Lustau sherry, Tawny Port, PX sherry, Kentucky Oak, and Missouri Oak non-age statement variants. Several cask-strength versions have also been released over the past dozen years. All versions of Redbreast possess similar characteristics from the ex-bourbon and Sherry cask maturation. Specifically, creamy mouthfeel and spice from the malted and un-malted barley mash bill are signature traits of the Redbreast range. Redbreast has long been considered the Christmas Irish Whiskey with its "fruit cake" in liquid form reputation.
The newest release has been aged 18 years, filling the gap in the range between the existing 15yr and 21yr expressions. Redbreast 18yr is bottled at 46% abv, similar to the 15yr, 21yr, and 27yr offerings. It is the first new permanent Redbreast release since the 27yr old in 2020. In that four year period, Redbreast experimented with port and PX sherry cask finished releases. Redbreast 18yr builds on this library of individual cask finishes in one release.
Redbreast 18yr is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, oloroso sherry, and ruby port casks similar to other expressions in the range. In addition to the longer maturation period, the other primary distinction of the 18yr Redbreast is the extended finishing period in cream sherry casks.
The reputation of cream sherry in the 21st century is not as favorable as in years past when it was the popular drink of choice. Ironically, the flavor profile of cream sherry is unknowingly enjoyed by many whiskey drinkers today. Cream sherry is simply the blending of a dry wine like Oloroso sherry with a sweet wine like Pedro Ximinez (PX) sherry. Redbreast 18yr consists of single pot still liquid aged for many years in former cream sherry casks from Antonio Páez Lobato cooperage. Other whiskeys have utilized multiple sherry cask styles without reference to cream sherry. Given its popularity and reputation, it is not surprising that a brand like Redbreast would be willing to use the cream sherry term and casks. What does this maturation process do for Redbreast?
Official Tasting Notes:
NOSE
Delectable berry fruit aromas of ripe blackcurrants and raspberries accompanied by sugar glazed cherries and dried fig. Indulgent tones of hazelnut chocolate and caramelized stone fruits with warming and fragrant notes of toasted almonds and cinnamon, nestled alongside polished oak and worn leather.
TASTE
Full-bodied and rounded, with the oak tannins complementing the decadent sweetness of sun-kissed grapes and autumnal fruits. Vibrant spices of freshly peeled ginger and hints of liquorice weave amongst the wine seasoned oak influences of dried fruits, dark berries and orange peel.
FINISH
Rich and lasting. The pot still spices, fruit and oak slowly fade harmoniously, showcasing the balance of this wonderfully complex whiskey.
Redbreast 18yr is a sublime Irish Whiskey. Fans of Redbreast will enjoy exploring the nuances of this newest expression. Everyone has a favorite in the Redbreast range and they all are worthy of praise. Comparing the three closest in age: the 15yr has the distinct cracked pepper note; the 18yr has subtle sweetness from the PX sherry and ruby port; and the 21yr exhibits more nuttiness. In a perfect world, you could enjoy them all on a regular basis, choosing based on your mood on a particular night. Given the elevated price range, this is not practical for most. If given the opportunity, savor the moment you get to enjoy a pour of the 18yr old Redbreast expression.
