My Bloody Irish Valentine - Irish Whiskey Cocktail

Posted by Irish Whiskey USA on

My Bloody Irish Valentine is the IWSA version of the classic Blood and Sand cocktail. One of the few popular peated whiskey cocktails, the IWSA version replaces Scotch with Irish Whiskey. We also take it one step further by using a peated Irish whiskey finished in a stout beer cask. This combination with the orange and cherry components creates the perfect Valentine's Day cocktail. The original Prohibition era cocktail was created in 1922 and named after the bullfighting movie of same name.

IWSA VERSION:

EQUIPMENT

INGREDIENTS

  • 3/4 oz Two Stacks Smoke & Mirrors Peated Stout Single Malt
  • 3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 3/4 oz Cherry Heering (Cherry liqueur or brandy)
  • 3/4 oz fresh orange juice (blood orange if available)
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice
  • Shake vigorously for 20 seconds
  • Double Strain and pour into glass
  • Garnish with an orange twist

The IWSA version replaces the blended Scotch with a peated Irish Whiskey single malt with a stout beer finish. This adds a chocolate note to the cocktail making for a Valentine's Day treat.

VARIATIONS

#1 If Two Stacks Smoke & Mirror is unavailable, substitute with a peated Irish Whiskey blend. Replacements include: Micil Inverin, Silkie Original, or Two Stacks First Cut.

#2 For a non-peat version, use an Irish Whiskey blend like Bushmills Original or Roe & Co.
